The state of Connecticut plans to distribute $6 million in loan refunds to college graduates who go to work in green industries, according to the Associated Press.
The AP reports that the pending bill "cites green technology, life science and health information technology because prospects are good for job growth in those industries and Connecticut is home to employers in fuel cell technology, pharmaceutical products and other high-tech industries."
In addition, the news agency says that similar programs for doctors and other health professionals have been successful in drawing them to low-income parts of both rural and urban districts. Doctors can graduate from medical school with hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans, experts say.
Other programs cited by the AP have had similar results, including a North Dakota incentive for teachers, and a Pennsylvania offer to would-be farm workers.
It seems, then, that Connecticut college grads can take jobs building energy-efficient business products such as computers or business projectors, for example, and expect that their hefty student loans will be partially repaid by the state.
