Gamers save through cloud computing
June 20, 2011

The cloud is making for a gaming revolution. To get the best quality graphics and the fastest online gaming service, video game users have to spend a decent amount of money on hardware. However, the cloud may be a useful way in which gamers can save on IT expenses.

According to the Kansas City Star, one of the biggest upfront costs a gamer can incur is a new graphics card required for a certain video game. Services in the cloud may prevent this from happening, as automatic server updates to cloud data centers ensure those using the offering have access to the latest available technology.

The news source reported video game enthusiasts may also expend less energy when gaming in the cloud, as all of the energy-guzzling processing is done on third-party servers. Therefore, gamers can use money saved by less costly electric bills to buy additional hardware, such as an ergonomic keyboard, a high-definition audio headset or a new HDMI projector.

Outsourcing IT powers may be a growing trend in the computing industry, as most customers jump at the ability to save.

"What you need in your home is just a screen showing all the bits on its pixels. The real work is done somewhere else," Dan Andresen, a computer scientist at Kansas State University, told media outlet.
