According to reports, Nintendo has been developing a new console that it will unveil to eager audiences soon. The console will be the company's sixth major home device, not including its handheld line.
Often, software and video game companies wait until the E3 Conference in June to make any major announcements regarding their slate or developments. Nintendo will unveil its new console then. Furthermore, Game Informer has learned that the new console will handle high-definition games.
While details are scarce at this point, IGN has reported the new system will be "significantly more powerful than PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360," and will have backwards compatibility, meaning gamers can continue to utilize their current Wii titles.
Both Game Informer and IGN both estimate the new system will be released in 2012, at which point gamers hooked up to HDTVs, high-tech computers and HDMI projectors can likely experience the latest in Mario's adventures.
Another gamer website, CVG, also reports that Nintendo has developed a new controller to complement the system that will have its own HD screen built in.
Nintendo's current system, the Nintendo Wii, has been extremely successful, selling 75 million units worldwide since its release in November 2006.
