Video game sales to experience down period
April 14, 2011

Video game sales in March were lower than last year.According to recent research from the NPD Group, March went out like a lion for the video game industry. The research firm's latest report expects to discover a decline in software sales during March into April when compared to last year's figures.

The news is interesting, as the market had witnessed the release of many high-profile games, including new Pokemon titles for Nintendo systems, which many expect to dethrone Call of Duty: Black Ops from the top spot. In addition, Electronic Arts had also released Crysis 2 and Dragon Age II, and THQ unveiled Homefront.

None of these titles were able to boost the market's sales, according to NPD's figures; however, last year's figures for March are slightly skewed, as Easter fell during the month last year, whereas the holiday is in April this year. Thus, holiday sales create a slight discrepancy.

In addition to the upcoming spending season, the market could see boosts due to new releases, though, as Nintendo recently announced several new games, including a remake of its classic Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the 3DS system. Thus, gamers hooked up to HDTVs, high-tech computers and HDMI projectors might not have much to worry about.

Despite the downward trend for the industry, EA recently announced its latest installment of Tiger Woods' signature game, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters, posted the best opening week sales of any game in the series at 225,000 copies sold.
