Despite the recently announced demise of the Guitar Hero series, Ubisoft is taking stab as the music video game genre with a new rhythm game titled Rocksmith.
In February, Activision said it was pulling the plug on its popular Guitiar Hero line, insisting the era of virtual guitar solos has run its course. Ubisoft apparently disagrees, and plans to release a game featuring tunes for such music legends as David Bowie, the Rolling Stones and Nirvana, as well as the Black Keys, Interpol and others.
Rocksmith does feature at least one significant disconnect from Guitar Hero and Harmonix's Rock Band. Rather than a plastic guitar, gamers can plug in any electric guitar with a one-fourth inch jack to their PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 or PC.
The virtual rock concert can be further enhanced by connecting one's console to an HDTV, LED monitor or HDMI projector to display video in pristine high-definition.
"Guitar Hero is a party game. Rocksmith is a music experience," said Ubisoft senior vice president of marketing Tony Key, according to IGN. "We will create a new generation of guitar players."
