An upcoming exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum will honor video games and showcase them as officials at the center see them - as pieces of art.
The Art of Video Games exhibit will take place in March and will explore the “40-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium,” as the museum’s website explains.
“Video games use images, actions and player participation to tell stories and engage their audiences,” the Smithsonian wrote. “In the same way as film, animation and performance, they can be considered a compeling and influential form of narrative art.”
The focus of the exhibition will be the contrast in visuals from early 8-bit games to the current high-definition games, which many gamers enjoy displaying on HDTVs, computers or HDMI projectors.
The museum currently has opened a vote to the public regarding which video games it will display during the exhibit. The museum’s website offers a choice of 80 games for users to choose from, divided by era, platform and game type.
The video market recently saw a decline during January, down slightly from the numbers seen during 2010’s same month.
