The day the music died: Guitar Hero series canceled
February 14, 2011

Activision recently announced it will no longer release Guitar Hero games.Activision Blizzard, creators of such popular video games as the Call of Duty franchise as well as World of Warcraft, announced on Thursday its Guitar Hero series has come to end.

Citing the fact that "the popularity of music-themed video games has faded," Activision is also eliminating its DJ Hero game, in addition to True Crime.

"We simply cannot make these games profitable based on current economics," said Activision's publishing chief executive, Eric Hirshberg.

The company explained that the games are expensive to manufacture, having to pay to license songs as well as manufacture the game's hardware.

In its six-year run with the franchise, Activision released 14 installments, including games focusing on specific bands, such as Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen.

No longer will gamers be able to do their best Joe Perry, Kirk Hammett or Eddie Van Halen impression in front of their HDTV, computer or HDMI projector.

Overall, the franchise has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide, taking in $2 billion in the U.S. alone.
