In lieu of the recently played Super Bowl, News 10, a local Sacramento news affiliate for ABC, released a list of the 12 best football video games.
The list took many factors into consideration, including gameplay, accuracy, graphics, pricing and more. Based upon these influences, the news station awarded the NFL2K series the top spot.
The series began in 2002 when Sega did not want to license the Madden franchise, and instead, created its own series for its Sega Dreamcast system. Since then, the NFL2K has become immensely popular, incorporating ESPN into its brand and even releasing games for as cheap as $19.99. With high-end graphics, the gameplay is perfect for serious gamers translating their screen onto their HDTVs, computers and HDMI projectors.
The Madden franchise, which tends to receive more media buzz, ranked second on News 10's list. Detractors for the franchise include various glitches and the infamous "Madden Curse." Typical high-end user play was mentioned as a positive.
Other games on the list include Super Tecmo Bowl, the NFL Blitz franchise, Backyard Football, NFL Quarterback Club, Backbreaker, NES Play Action Football, the NFL GameDay franchise and the NFL Street franchise.
To date, the NFL2K series has released six installments of the popular franchise.
