Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption earned top honors at this year's Spike TV Video Game Awards held Saturday in Los Angeles.
Competing against other heavy hitters, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, God of War III, Halo: Reach and Mass Effect 2, the Western epic ultimately prevailed, earning the title of Game of the Year, as well as three other honors.
Red Dead Redemption returns gamers to the American Wild West as former outlaw John Marston, who is dragged back into the shady criminal underworld after his wife and son are kidnapped by government agents.
The action-adventure game features an open world system where gamers can explore the vast countryside of the United States and Mexico circa 1910. Available on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, gamers who want to view Red Dead Redemption's sweeping landscapes and graphics in picturesque quality can connect their console to an HD-TV, LED monitor or DLP gaming projector.
Other VGA winners include Super Mario Galaxy 2, which won best Wii game; Mass Effect 2 for best Xbox 360 game and God of War III for best PlayStation 3 game.
