Lord of the Rings fans will get to play as their favorite Middle-earth characters for free this fall.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that Turbine, creator of the award-winning The Lord of the Rings Online, will release a new update in the upcoming months allowing gamers to download and play the popular online role-playing game without spending a penny.
Jeff Junge, senior vice president for online games and digital game platforms at Warner Brothers, said the "franchise's expansive adventure story lends itself perfectly for LOTRO free-to-play, giving a wide range of players the opportunity to experience the game."
The Tolkien-inspired game offers a massive realm for players to explore as well as high-end graphics - ideal for gamers who connect their computers to high-definition monitors, LCD screens or HDMI projectors.
The first 50 levels of the MMORPG will be free to play, but additional content such as expansions, quest packs and items will be available for purchase from the LOTRO store.
Turbine operates the award-winning game in addition to Dungeons and Dragons Online. Together, the two games combine for 13 percent of the MMO marketplace, according to Mark Tremblay, president of Warner, GamePro relays.
