Halo: Reach beta opens the floodgates, sees more than 1 million players on first day May 17, 2010
The latest installment of the massively popular Halo series of console-based first-person shooters is now in its beta testing phase, and gaming blog Kotaku reported that more than a million players joined in within the first 24 hours of its availability. The series has been widely lauded by critics for its smooth gameplay and striking graphics, which really shine on HDTVs, high-def computer screens, or HDMI projectors. Halo: Reach's beta opened to Xbox Live gold members earlier this month, and the availability expanded to those without a gold membership as of May 14, though they will need to have purchased a copy of the previous iteration of the series, Halo: ODST. Kotaku writer Luke Plunkett said that "Reach has so far been a blast. The matchmaking system is a delight, especially how my friends are displayed on the game's opening screen, and I'm also really digging the new class-based system." Plunkett compared the system to that of Team Fortress 2, another popular multiplayer shooter. | Sifteo cubes offer unique gaming opportunities
