The broadening association between computer projectors and home video gaming systems continues, according to tech blog Crunchgear, which reports that it's now possible to produce a gun-like controller for playing shooting games using a projector and several accelerometers.
Prototypes of such a device have been in the pipeline for years, and the basic concept harkens all the way back to the NES Zapper that was released with the original Nintendo Entertainment System in the 1980s.
Crunchgear's Devin Coldewey warned, however, that the new prototype - which was originally detailed at the website Hackaday - is not without its drawbacks. "Basically it just uses some open source position-tracking software called SpacePoint Fusion, although at the moment it's only playing a hacked version of open source FPS Cube and the setup is a bit bulky," he wrote.
Advances in motion-sensitive gaming controllers go hand-in-hand with the advent of new types of display, according to experts, who say that new technology can offer game players new and different ways to interact with their virtual worlds.
