Expert: Cinematics in upcoming Iron Man 2 video game take a trip into uncanny valley April 30, 2010
The well-known phenomenon of the uncanny valley, which explains the unpleasant reactions that almost-perfect representations of human beings create in people, is present in the cinematics for the upcoming video game adaptation of Iron Man 2, according to Kotaku blogger Michael Fahey. Fahey writes that the "cinematic intro for Sega's Iron Man 2 captures the wit and warmth of the movie franchise quite nicely, even if the characters do look a little creepy." The game is due out three days before the film on which it is based, this May 4. The uncanny valley phenomenon has been a stumbling block to numerous recent attempts to create perfect simulations of human beings, from 2001's Final Fantasy film through last year's Avatar. Seen via the widescreen projector of a movie theater, even the most minute details and flaws of computer-generated animation are visible to the public. The latter film was more successful, however, depicting mostly blue-skinned non-humans, thus avoiding the worst of the uncanny valley's effects. | Sifteo cubes offer unique gaming opportunities
