Energy efficiency rules could be pending for games industry
April 7, 2010

Don't worry, green games could be on the wayWhile video games are, from an ecological standpoint, a frequently overlooked corner of the tech industry, a new report from Game Pro suggests that this might change in the near future.

Game Pro's recently released How Green is My Game report says that "while playing a game, we rarely think about how we affect the virtual environment. Unfortunately, that's often the case regarding the real-life environment, too." Tongue firmly in cheek, the report questions the effect of burning zombies on air quality.

More seriously, however, Game Pro argues for the industry and its customers to pay much closer attention to their carbon footprints. Any number of steps, from unplugging consoles and monitors to using energy-efficient HDMI projectors for displaying games, can be used to help lessen the ecological impact of video gaming.

Experts have noted that increasing amounts of electronic waste have been seen across the globe. This growth in e-waste has contributed to the creation of serious public health issues in some countries, as older electronic devices are likely to contain hazardous chemicals.ADNFCR-3190-ID-19706572-ADNFCR
