New technology could spur convergence of gaming and other digital entertainment
March 26, 2010

Tech centralization could bring big changes for gamesRapidly advancing display, storage, and connectivity technology could lead to the entertainment systems of the future being contained in one or two devices, rather than the half-dozen or so that are necessary these days.

Cult of Mac reports that "both the introduction of new iMacs with 27-inch screens, coupled with Apple's success with the App Store and the Cupertino, California company's desire to be a player in portable gaming points toward the logic of a move into HDTV." An Apple TV, the site says, may be the consequence.

But an Apple all-in-one solution might not be the only one in the works, despite the company's long experience with such centralized devices. Alternatives like GoogleTV, which Cult of Mac says may already be in testing with satellite TV service provider Dish Network, might provide the ability to mate a content-providing device with any type of display, such as an HDMI projector or plasma TV.

Experts say that new display technology combines advances in energy efficiency and performance, and that these advances are particularly noticeable in modern projectors.ADNFCR-3190-ID-19692656-ADNFCR
