Students from Sherwood High School in suburban Maryland won the Judge's Choice award at the prestigious Global Game Jam, which was held earlier this year at the University of Maryland at Baltimore County.
The four students - two freshmen, one sophomore, and a junior - were the only high school team to participate in the event, according to the Montgomery Gazette. The Global Game Jam gives teams 48 hours to create a game based on a set theme. This year, games had to incorporate the concept of deception, as well as at least one of the words "rain," "Spain," or "plain." The group's prize-winning entry was titled, accurately, Bunnies Accumulating Flowers and Fighting Zombies.
The Sherwood High team learned their craft in the technologically enhanced classroom of Donna Thomas, the Gazette said. The students' work prior to their prize winner may have been seen by their peers and teacher on the classroom projector.
UMBC computer science game development track director Marc Olano told the Gazette that "they won the judges' award because they had a great game."
