Tablets are the new PC in classrooms, survey shows According to Apple Insider, a recent survey of 25 school technology directors across the United States indicated that within the next five years, tablets will outnumber traditional computers in U.S. schools.

Technology directors and IT coordinators in schools are turning to devices like tablet computers, interactive whiteboards and DLP projectors in an attempt to modernize classrooms across the country. Advanced classroom technology presents a number of educational opportunities, and updating classroom technology can save energy, improve communication and simplify many IT processes in schools.

The limited sample survey found that the majority of schools had integrated Apple's iPad into their classrooms. While the burgeoning Android tablet market is sure to attract some suitors, the iPad, at least at the moment, is the most heavily favored classroom tablet.

Using tablets in the classroom can also cut down on textbook expenses. Ron Johnson, the former head of retail operations for Apple, told the source that it's possible that tablet computers could effectively do away with backpacks in the coming years.

Apple reported record sales for the iPad in the fourth quarter of the 2011 fiscal year, selling 11.2 million units, a major contributing factor in the company's 54 percent profit increase.
