New York communications company establishes $50,000 in classroom technology grants

New York communications company establishes $50,000 in classroom technology grants Optimum Lightpath, an ethernet communications company based in Jericho, New York, recently announced that it will award $50,000 in grants to schools in Westchester County to expand the use of technology in the classroom. The grant money will be awarded to qualifying schools in the area, and winners will be announced on November 10.

Students who have access to technology in the classroom, like tablet computers, interactive whiteboards or HDMI projectors, have certain advantages over students who are taught in a traditional classroom setting. Classroom technology helps teachers individualize lesson plans and recognize and fill in gaps in understanding quickly.

Optimum Lightpath's Transforming Education with Technology grant program is currently accepting applications from schools that want to develop and promote technology practices, implement distance-learning programs or update existing technology.

"Westchester prides itself as New York's 'Intellectual Capital' and technology is a critical part of that," said county executive Robert Astorino.

A spokesperson for Optimum Lightpath, which provides fiber-optic network solutions in Westchester County, said that the company is committed to helping classrooms leverage new technology to improve teaching methods.
