Louisiana school district launches technology pilot program
July 20, 2011

Pilot program has students bringing their mobile devices to schoolNext year, students of the St. Charles Parish school district in Louisiana will have access to the latest educational technology, reported Nola.com. Starting in the fall, children will be allowed to bring their personal computing devices, such as smartphones and tablets, to school with them.

"We want to teach them responsible use of developing technology," Stephanie Steib, director of information technology services for the district, told the news provider.

According to Steib, some educational technology devices have already made their way into the classroom environment through various other pilot programs. However, the new initiative intends to personalize student learning via their own mobile devices.

Some tablets and smartphones can integrate with other educational technology devices, such as an e-reader, a laptop or a classroom projector. Therefore, learning may be effective in both the classroom and at home.

In addition to the usual school subjects, educators with the school district hope the initiative will teach students about responsibility. However, Steib stated that, ultimately, parents will decide whether or not their child can be held accountable for the expensive mobile devices.
