Technology grants help students from military families

Technology connects students with their serving parents overseasAccording to local news affiliate KFBB, the New Great Falls school district in Montana will use grant money to fund its Transition Resource Opportunities Offered to Parents and Students program.

The TROOPS program is intended to help students cope with the demands placed on military families, in which one parent may be deployed overseas for months on end, stated the news source. The initiative will set up additional counseling resources for students and provide technology, such as Skype, that enables students to videoconference with their serving parents.

In meeting these emotional needs, students who might otherwise become distracted may be able to focus more on school. Additionally, other educational technology devices, such as a high-tech computer, a videoconferencing solution or a DLP projector, may enable classrooms to connect with soldiers overseas and offer them thanks for their service.

Educators with the school district say students from military families typically do well in school, though they often have emotional needs that need to be addressed from time to time. According to the media outlet, the new technology program may bring educational continuity to children of servicemen and women.
