The National Endowment for the Arts fund recently awarded the University of Houston with a $100,000 Our Town grant intended to benefit cultural and artistic learning, announced the higher education institution.
The program will allow the university to create civic art projects intended to inspire the community at large, stated the university.
"Communities across our country are using smart design and leveraging the arts to enhance quality of life and promote their distinctive identities," said Rocco Landesman, chairman of the NEA. "In this time of great economic upheaval, Our Town provides communities an opportunity to reignite their economies."
Many of these projects will use new media and technology to bring about a different artistic perspective. Therefore, art professors with the university may inspire their students to use an iPad, a high-tech designing program or an HDMI projector, when creating their unique pieces.
Many of the University of Houston's art displays will be erected in the city's Third Ward.
"We are tremendously excited that the Third Ward Arts Initiative has been selected to receive the Our Town grant from the National Endowment for the Arts," said Renu Khator, president of the University of Houston.
