Additional funding needed for aging Tennessee high school

School in Tennessee in need of a major overhaulAccording to local news provider WHBF, Knoxville High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, has been around since the 1930s, though it has yet to go through any major overhauls.

Currently, the school is waiting on a grant it applied for more than 10 years ago, reported the new source. The additional funds will be used to repair the deteriorating facilities, as well as bring the school into the 21st century.

"I've had four sons graduate from there, and that was many years ago. It's deteriorated greatly since then," Bernadine Fleisher, a Knoxville resident, told the news source.

If and when the grant comes, some of the money may be used to buy new educational technology devices for the school. Accordingly, teachers may apply for small grants that would adequately pay for certain devices, such as an e-reader, an interactive whiteboard or a DLP projector.

Despite the long waiting period, school officials remain hopeful that needs will soon be met, as the high school recently climbed to the top of the state's grant waiting list.

"There's a lot of excitement right now," said Knoxville superintendent Steve Wilder. "This is a great opportunity for this community."
