Teachers in Horry County, South Carolina, will become students again and learn key concepts relating to science, technology, engineering and mathematics, reported the Sun News.
A grant was recently awarded to the school district that will pay for teacher training this summer, stated the news source. In all, 28 math and science teachers will attend STEM seminars at Coastal Carolina University in the coming weeks.
According to the media outlet, STEM education has become a topic of central importance for teachers in the United States. After they receive the 15 days worth of scientific training, teachers from Horry County may impart their newfound knowledge on their students. Furthermore, many may use education-focused technology, such as an interactive whiteboard, a STEM computer program or a
DLP projector, among other devices, to do so.
Extended teacher training is a necessary part of quality education, stated Heather Sheehan, the district's program and grant coordinator.
"It also provides professional learning communities for the teachers," she told the media outlet. "It's a way to share professional knowledge and gain information, but also camaraderie and support."
