According to the Daily Republic, Alexandria, Virginia, and its school system will raise funds for the construction of a new library. Community education officials claimed the new facility will help the school district meet education demands created by growing enrollment numbers, as well as provide the community greater access to learning materials.
Project coordinators expect the new facility to cost $1 million, reported the new source. To meet this monetary goal, fundraising initiatives have been started by the community. Additionally, the project received a $300,000 community development grant, which helped the effort get underway.
The new community library will be attached to a local school, and the center will likely take advantage of the educational technology owned by the school. Librarians looking to enrich patron experiences may consider pairing selected literature with advanced devices, such as a e-reader, a LeapFrog tutorial program or a
DLP projector.
City officials believe both intuitions may mutually benefit from the collaboration.
"The city library has a large collection of more than 5,000 books and more than 1,000 videos, which would add to the school’s collection of 604 books," superintendent Jim Bridge told the media outlet. "On the other end, the school has the technology the city library lacks."
