The next big thing in educational technology may be interactive whiteboards. However, because they are relatively new, these devices are not completely interoperable among competing manufacturers. Recently, the IMS Global Learning Consortium took a closer look at the teaching aids, claimed Campus Technology.
Interactive whiteboards are becoming more popular in classrooms worldwide, though, in many cases, the products developed by one vendor will not display properly when used by competitor's platforms, stated the news source. The IMS organization intends to change this through a process set to begin with conformance testing. After 90 days of analysis, the education technology panel will create a workgroup to continue with research.
Classroom implements, such as interactive whiteboards, may be useful tools for teachers who incorporate technology in their daily lessons. Accordingly, these educators may also consider purchasing additional devices, such as an e-reader, a 3D software program or a classroom projector.
When interactive whiteboards become interoperable with one another, the technology may become an even more powerful educational aid.
"By working with other manufacturers in the educational technology industry, we are removing unnecessary pain points for schools,” Kevin Pawsey, managing director for RM Education, told the media outlet. "Educators shouldn't have to worry that lessons they create today will become obsolete if their school changes hardware tomorrow."
