Ohio career center creates online STEM program

New program prepares students for collegeBefore breaking into a field dealing with science, technology, engineering and math, students must undergo rigorous academic training. However, for some career centers, there simply are not enough resources in place to make STEM programs available to pupils in a normal business day.

This issue was recently addressed by the Grant Career Center in Bethel, Ohio, which developed an online chemistry program designed to further educate pupils outside the classroom. The initiative was created to prepare students for college-level chemistry courses, which are not always readily available through technical institutions.

The program, called itslearning, was developed by GCC chemistry teachers and will be available to Ohio institutions online. A tech-savvy educator may deploy the program in the classroom along with other education technology devices, such as an e-reader, a new computer program or a DLP projector.

The flexible education offering may bring additional benefits to students already swamped with heavy course loads. According to the media outlet, it may even reach teens who wouldn't normally be geared toward scientific fields.

"Bringing fundamental college prep courses online is a great way to increase our offerings to our students who are typically scheduled to work on more career focused programs during regular school hours," said Cathy Macdonald, technology supervisor for GCC.
