Verizon recently announced that, in order to get North Carolina schoolchildren up to speed in science, technology, engineering and math, it has launched a grant initiative to which any public school in the state can apply.
The company reported that $5,000 grants will be awarded to 10 schools that qualify for the program. Furthermore, the additional funds for education are part of the telecommunications provider's larger initiative of introducing advanced technology resources to teachers. Verizon does this through a program called Thinkfinity.org, which features a website where educators can access 55,000 online learning resources.
Teachers may use the grant money to purchase additional technology resources, which many experts say empowers student learning. Tech-savvy educators with this goal in mind may consider buying an advanced computer, a 3D screen or a classroom projector.
"In North Carolina, there is an increased focus from our government and education leaders to ensure our students have a strong foundation in science, technology, engineering and math, preparing them to compete in a global economy," said Jerry Fountain, Verizon's president for the Carolinas.
