Lego Mindstorm sets: The building blocks of robotics educationA recent grant to Norris Childers Elementary in Lincoln, North Carolina, may change student perceptions of Lego building blocks from toys to actual classroom tools, reported the Lincoln Tribune.

The school purchased six Lego Mindstorm robotics sets after procuring a $2,500 Education Foundation Technology grant, according to the news source. After receiving the sets, the school welcomed retired IBM engineer Donald McCoy, who ran instructional seminars for students.

All elementary grade levels will get to experience firsthand the wonders of robotics learning, and the hope is that some students will take their newfound appreciation for mechanical engineering beyond primary school. Teachers who specialize in this education at the high school level may want to apply for future grant money to buy a high-tech computer, a interactive whiteboard or a classroom projector

Robotics education can lead to otherworldly possibilities. According to Space Travel, a robotics competition geared toward high school students will feature the Lego systems. The grand prize is $30 million trip to the moon paid for by Google.
