According to the Ocean City Patch, the public library of Ocean City, Maryland recently awarded the local school district with a $30,000 grant. The money will be used to buy e-readers for 200 high school students throughout the city.
The award, while benefiting education, is also an attempt by the library to bring up its own attendance levels. The news source states that the e-readers will allow students with valid library cards to download books straight to the devices for free.
Students in certain classes will be able to download assigned reading material designated by the teacher. Also, the media outlet claims teachers will be able to upload their own custom lessons onto the devices to engage their students.
Tech-savvy teachers have noticed that students are quite receptive to technology in the classroom. Educators looking to enhance their lesson plans may consider buying an interactive whiteboard, an educational software program or a classroom projector.
Additionally, the school district points out that the e-readers are a cost-cutting measure. The e-books, because they do not require printing, may eventually eliminate the need to purchase expensive textbooks at the beginning of each academic year, states the news organization.
