Maine school district approves iPad program for kindergarten students
April 22, 2011

Though it hasn't secured the funding, the Auburn, Maine school district plans to equip kindergarten students with iPad 2 devices. The school district committee in Auburn, Maine, recently approved a measure to put Apple iPad 2 devices in the hands of kindergarten students, TMCnet reports.

According to the report, the school district plans to spend around $200,000 on the project, which will provide 285 students with the latest media tablet from Apple. While funding for the project has not yet been allocated, the district plans to obtain them by adjusting the school budget and through grants.

Superintendent Tom Morrill asserted that in the 21st century, media tablets are becoming even more important than text books. Many text books are now available for download on the tablet. Coupled with a Wi-Fi connection to the internet and various software programs, the iPad and other tablets combine many educational needs on one device.

In addition to tablets, many schools are investing in technology, such as computers, interactive whiteboards and DLP projectors, to enhance the educational experience. Many teachers have found technology plays a significant role in the way students today learn.

Earlier this month, Pal-Item.com reported that Northeastern Junior/Senior High School in Fountain City, Indiana, would invest in new iPads and laptops for students. The school received a grant from the state Department of Education to purchase the technology.
