The Charleston Regional Business Journal recently reported that aerospace and defense corporation Boeing has donated $129,000 to help South Carolina schools improve student achievement in STEM studies.
STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math, has been a major focus for many schools in recent years, as many educators believe knowledge in these areas improve students' chances of landing jobs following graduation.
The Boeing grant, which will be administered through the Education Foundation, will help teachers explore new ways to improve STEM education and also "help bridge the gap between schools and businesses that rely on engineering and math skills," the news provider noted.
Though the report didn't specify how the grant would be allocated, many schools use funding to invest in new technology, such as a computer, an interactive whiteboard or an HDMI projector, to create learning environments that encourage student participation.
The Education Foundation was established by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce to bolster student achievement. In December, the organization announced it received $15,000 from the Alcoa Foundation to develop "career exploration modules" for high school students.
