April 18, 2011

Some Rockingham County Schools students will receive laptops when they return to school next semester. When incoming freshmen and sophomores from Rockingham County Schools enter the classroom next semester, they will be awarded with new laptops, courtesy of a sizable grant from local nonprofit the Reidsville Area Foundation, GoDanRiver.com reports.

The nonprofit recently approved a $1.4 million grant to help the school upgrade its technology in the classroom. Coupled with a $1 million grant awarded by the Golden LEAF Foundation earlier this month, the school plans to purchase 2,000 laptops for its students, according to the news provider.

Eventually, the district plans to provide laptops to all 4,350 high schools students, the report noted.

Many educators have found they can use technology in the classroom to enhance the educational experience. For example, teachers may use the laptops in conjunction with an HDTV, LED monitor or HDMI projector to create a learning environment that encourages class participation.

In addition to the laptops, the school district has made several moves to bring its classrooms into the 21st century. According to the report, the district has also equipped several of its classrooms with an interactive whiteboard, a document camera and an overhead projector.
