Recently, the Midland, Michigan-based Grace A. Dow Foundation donated $1 million to Hope College in Holland, Michigan to further the institution's science education.
Biochemistry, chemistry and molecular biology students will now have access to further funds to continue in-depth investigation into their fields. The grant program will select four students from the college as Dow scholars each year, which will then reward them with stipends to continue their research with a faculty members during a 10-week period. The program will begin in 2012 and will be awarded each summer.
Hope currently has five other awards through the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates program in the biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics fields.
While the small college typically uses its funds for high-level research, other schools receiving newly allocated funds often invest in new technology. Smartboards, high-tech computers and HDMI projectors have all seen increased adoption in classrooms recently.
In addition to the Grace A. Dow foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has also recently donated large amounts to various colleges, including several in Missouri.
