Officials at the Museum of Science in Boston recently announced that Google had awarded the institution a $1 million grant to further its educational efforts.
The grant is one of 12 that Google has awarded to seven science museums located in the United States and UK. A Google spokeperson relayed that these grants are intended to encourage science education.
“We picked museums that are in communities where Googlers volunteer at the museum and have ties to the museum,’’ said Google representative Jamie Yood. “We think our collaboration with these museums isn’t going to end when we sign a check.’’
Google has a research center close to the Boston museum, and many of its 300 workers volunteer at the institution.
Yood explained that the museum can use its funds the best way it feels possible. Recent education grants have led to schools adopting better technology, such as computers, smartboards and HDMI projectors. However, the museum hasn't released any details thus far.
In addition to Google, several other major companies have issued similar education grants. MetLife, Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase have all taken part in awarding grants.
