American Cancer Society issues grants for research and training
April 5, 2011

The American Cancer Society awarded generous amounts of grants for research and training.Officials from the American Cancer Society recently announced the nonprofit organization has awarded more than $51 million to 85 institutions across the country to aid research and training programs. In all, 132 grants were issued during the second of two grant cycles the ACS will conduct in 2011.

Since its inception in 1946, the American Cancer Society has donated more than $3.5 billion toward cancer research, and has provided funds to 44 researchers that later won the Nobel Prize.

The latest round of grants will help various researchers analyze and study causes of cancer, as well as potential treatments for the disease. Furthermore, the funds will help these researchers train new helpers to aid their studies.

While these funds are being used for greater research purposes, many other organizations and institutions receiving grants have upgraded their technology, adopting high-tech gadgets, computers and even HDMI projectors.

In a related story, the Rhode Island Foundation recently issued funds for similar reasons to a local medical school, which will assist in the training of future physicians.
