Internet voice-calling services provider Skype recently announced the launch of a new program designed to enable teachers to collaborate with each other - even if they're on opposites sides of the globe.
The new platform, called Skype in the Classroom, is an online community that lets teachers using Skype connect with one another and share ideas and lesson plans. Teachers can create profiles that describe their classes and highlight their teaching goals.
In a statement, Skype said one of the greatest challenges facing teachers using Skype is connecting to "like-minded" teachers online to share ideas and skills. However, through Skype in the Classroom, teachers can reach out to more than 7,400 teachers already using the program.
Teachers are increasingly using internet-based video calling to expand their classrooms beyond four walls. These teaching techniques can be enhanced by running a video feed through an HDTV, an LED monitor or a
DLP projector, which can help teachers reach a wider audience and encourage class participation.
Skype in the Classroom has been available in beta since the end of December. According to the company, more than 3,900 teachers from 99 countries participated during the testing phase.
