March 28, 2011

The FCC's donation will provide Haralson County students with access to wireless internet both at school and at home. The Federal Communications Commission recently awarded Haralson County High School in Georgia $500,000 to continue its program to provide high-speed broadband internet for students both at school and at home, Times-Georgian reports.

Haralson County High is one of 20 schools and libraries throughout the nation to receive the grant, which is being funded through the FCC's E-rate Learning On-the-Go wireless program. The FCC's grant will add on to the $1.7 million previously provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, through which the school purchased netbooks for students, according to the news provider.

"This will be beneficial to students when they leave and in class because they’ll have access to resources they might not otherwise have,” said Halason County school system technology director Patsy Dorrough.

Many educators have found technology to be an invaluable teaching tool in the classroom. For example, teachers can use a computer, a tablet PC or an HDMI projector to expand students' education and give them access to tools they may once again use in the future.

According to a study by the FCC, 56 percent of schools and libraries expected to expand use of digital educational tools in 2010.
