March 18, 2011

Retired teachers are donating scholarships to local students in New London, CT.Officals from the New London County Retired Teachers Association announced the Connecticut-based group will award two $1,500 scholarships to local seniors. Eligible soon-to-be-graduates must plan to enter college and enter a teaching track.

In addition, the area's American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 128, Niantic, has offered its own grant, the Veteran's Memorial Education Grant, for local students. The grant is worth $1,000 and will be awarded to a student entering a university, college, technical school or professional school meeting the approval of the Auxiliary Education committee.

New London is also offering several other scholarships for local students. These donations continue a recent trend of benefitting schools and students, as many schools nationwide have recently received education grants to improve their learning and teaching capabilities.

Many schools have used their education grants in the classroom, upgrading their technology, which includes computers, smartboards and HDMI projectors.

The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded nearly $550 million to five states during the last year as part of its initiative to boost low-performing schools nationwide.
