Ohio school plans to pursue technology grant

The Chillicothe City school district is seeking funding to improve its phone systems, among other things.The Chillicothe City school board in Ohio recently agreed to pursue a state grant that will enable it to more than $400,000 worth of technology in return for a $100,000 investment, the Chillicothe Gazette reports.

The school district is seeking an E-Rate grant, which provides schools with significant discounts on technology purchases. According to the news provider, Chillicothe could receive a discount for as much as 88 percent.

As part of a five-year technology improvement program, the school district plans to use the funding to pay for upgrades to its network, wireless internet and phone systems. However, many schools use state and federal grants to update classroom technology, including the installation of a computer system, an interactive whiteboard or a DLP projector.

According to the Chillicothe Gazette, the school district has until March 24 to apply for the grant.

Schools that utilize state-of-the-art technology in the classroom have found they can create environments that engage students and bolster the learning experience. During a recent appearance at a school in Boston, President Obama said technology "opens up a window for learning."
