March 7, 2011

Obama will visit the TechBoston Academy to discuss innovation in the 21st century classroom. The White House recently announced President Obama plans to visit a Boston-area public school that focuses on combining technology with academic programs when he is in the city this week, the Boston Globe reports.

The president will be in town to attend a Democratic fundraiser at the Museum of Fine Arts. But before the event, he will stop by the TechBoston Academy in Dorchester, Massachusetts, to discuss the role technology and innovation have in the 21st century classroom.

Technology in the classroom has proven to be a helpful tool to expand student resources and boost achievement. Many teachers have found they can utilize a computer, interactive whiteboard or classroom projector to improve the learning experience for their students.

According to the Globe, President Obama will be joined by Melinda Gates, whose Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation provided a grant to start the school in 2002.

The TechBoston Academy currently has nearly 800 students enrolled in grades six through 12. Attended by students mostly from low-income families, the school has an 85 percent graduation rate, and 93 percent of its graduates go to college, according to its website.
