Universities in Kentucky receive education grant to aid disabled students

Several Kentucky Universities received education grants to aid disabled students.A $2.2 million grant was recently awarded to a joint venture between Northern Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky.

The new funds will help develop a support system for students with developmental disabilities. The universities’ Supported Higher Education Project will support nearly 150 challenged students in their higher education settings. In addition, the newly received funds will help develop a training program for roughly 2,000 professionals in schools or disability programs.

A represenative from Northern Kentucky University also expressed the venture’s goal to have the program available to all those with intellectual disabilities in all areas of the college experience.

While further details of the fund use were not released, many schools receiving grants recently have invested in better technology for their classrooms. Interactive whiteboards, high-tech computers and HDMI projectors have seen increased adoption by schools nationwide.

In addition to the Kentucky universities, USA Funds, a nonprofit organization, has helped college students as well. The company recently awarded more than $3 million in grants to help American families benefit from postsecondary education.
