URS, the company in charge of the Umatilla Chemical Depot, located in Hermiston, Oregon, will be awarding $10,000 in education grants to local schools to further education in the science, math and technology fields.
This marks the fifth straight year URS has awarded such grants to schools in close proximity to its Umatilla Chemical Ageny Disposal Facility. Recently, the company issued 20 grants worth $500 each to local teachers.
Schools are expected to use these new funds in a variety of ways, including purchasing new lab and robotic supplies as well as windmill demonstration material. The schools will also look to upgrade their technology, incorporating interactive whiteboards, high-tech computers and HDMI projectors into their classrooms.
Among the schools receiving the grants are Hermiston High School, Sandstone Middle School, Highland Hills Elementary and Houghton Elementary, all within close range of Hermiston and the depot.
In addition to URS, several other major companies have been donating such grants, including MetLife, Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase.
