February 21, 2011

A Massachusetts town received grants to help Wakefield High School, located in Wakefield, Massachusetts, recently received an education grant intended to help the school develop initiatives that aid “at-risk” students.

The Wakefield Educational Foundation provided Victor Branco of WHS with $1,250 to develop these initiatives for students that show behavioral difficulties or academic failure.

According to an article in the Wakefield Sun, 10 to 15 percent of a student body can pose such problems in a school, equaling roughly 20 students per class, depending on size.

In WHS’ program, named Steps 2 Success - Behavior Education and Reinforcement Program, at-risk students will be matched with a support staff member and an individual teacher who will monitor and mentor the student on a daily basis.

The grant will be used for resources, such as agenda books, tutor fees and expenses for other various activities.

WEF’s donation continues the trend nationwide, with many schools receiving grants to further education. Many of these schools have invested in newer technologies, such as smartboards, computers and classroom projectors. In the nearby town of Needham, Massachusetts, the education board is currently accepting applications for similar grants.
