February 16, 2011

General Mills recently issued a generous grant to schools to promote healthy living. As part of its initiative to promote healthy education to children, General Mills recently donated $190,000 in grants to various schools and districts in Georgia.

With the new grant money, teachers in the Covington, Newton, Rockdale and other surrounding counties will implement educational classes about leading healthy lives. The money will also go toward establishing community-driven activities.

“General Mills has been a consistent support of the Newton County school district,” said Corey Stegall, assistant principal at Middle Ridge Elementary School, located in Covington, Georgia. “We are proud to have someone in the community that not only talked it but walks it. It will make a difference in the lives of our children.”

During the last several years, General Mills has donated nearly $170,000 in grants to various community-based organizations to promote the same education. The company was able to raise its award money due to the opening of a warehouse in a nearby county.

In addition to beginning classes regarding healthy living, other schools receiving grants have invested in newer technologies, such as smartboards, digital cameras and classroom projectors.

Like General Mills, other major companies, such as Lowe’s, MetLife and Qwest, have all donated money to further education in schools nationwide.
