Recently, several South Carolina schools, communities, local government organizations and others received grants worth close to $20,000 to dispose of litter, beautify their areas and spread awareness of environmental protection.
The money issued came from the 2010-2011 Palmetto Pride grants, worth nearly $413,000 in all. These grants were intended to reach 112 South Carolina groups across four categories - Community Pride, education, enforcement and the Keep South Carolina Beautiful groups.
The education grants are intended to further the teaching of environmental studies to K-12 students, while helping them refurbish their local communities.
Other schools recently receiving such grants have invested in technology, such as a smartboard, computer or HDMI projector for their classrooms.
For community-based organizations, the grants will help establish beautification groups and anti-litter programs. The Community Pride grants are available for all litter-related organizations, neighborhood associations, government bodies and nonprofits in the area.
In related news, six Oklahoma programs recently received nearly $3 million in federal stimulus grants intended to promote education about emerging green industries.
