In an effort to boost educational resources in schools, Verizon recently announced it has awarded 29 nonprofits throughout Pennsylvania grants totaling $287,500.
The grants, which range from $2,000 to $59,000, will be used by the nonprofits to support various educational projects throughout the commonwealth. Projects may include a range of activities, including scholarships, support for after-school programs or investing in new educational technology.
Educators have found the use of technology can greatly enhance the education and development of students. For example, educators can use a laptop computer, an interactive whiteboard or an HDMI projector to give students access to new resources and equipment they may once again use in their careers.
"It's a win for the children and parents in the communities served by these nonprofits, and it's a win for companies like Verizon, which have an opportunity to invest in education and prepare our children to meet the unique challenges of living and working in the 21st century," said Verizon Pennsylvania president Gale Given.
According to Verizon, the grants were awarded through Pennsylvania's Educational Improvement Tax Credit program, which gives tax credits to companies that contribute to educational programs. The program authorized $60 million in tax credits last year, Verizon stated.
