Recently, Puget Sound Energy announced it would be rewarding public schools and nonprofit organizations that have a focus on renewable energy with grants ranging from $5,000 to $20,000.
To date, PSE's Energy Education Program and Green Power Program have awarded nearly $395,000 in grants to 23 educational projects regarding solar power. Last year, PSE awarded Echo Glen Children's Center, a school campus in Snoqualmie, Washington, $6,000 for its solar energy program.
Schools eligible for the grant must have featured their energy efficiency program during the last 36 months. In addition to the funds, recipient schools also receive educational materials and support, including science teaching training, classroom activity guides and renewable-energy science kits. The deadline for 2011 applicants is March 15.
Recently, schools receiving education grants have focused these funds on upgrading classroom technology in order to further teaching ability. High-tech equipment, such as smartboards, computers and classroom projectors, have incorporated into daily lessons.
In addition to PSE's contributions, Lowe's recently awarded 14 schools in South Carolina with education grants.
