Bayonne Medical Center in Bayonne, New Jersey, recently announced it will donate $150,000 over the next three years to the Simpson-Baber Foundation to help raise awareness about autism and also provide services to children with autism, the Hudson Reporter reports.
According to the news provider, the medical center would not simply hand over the money, however. Instead, it issued a challenge to the Simpson-Baber Foundation to raise $150,000 of its own through donations, which BMC then matched dollar-for-dollar.
"We were going to give the money to them anyway," said BCM CEO Dan Kane. "But we decided to make it a challenge grant."
The Simpson-Baber Foundation attempts to help children with autism in a variety of ways, including organizing parties, funding field trips and purchasing educational technology. Educators have found they can use technology, such as a computer, an interactive whiteboard or an HDMI projector, to encourage a student's participation and educational development.
According to a statistic from the Simpson-Baber Foundation, one in every 94 children in New Jersey is affected by autism.
