A recent study titled “Relationship of the TeachSmart Learning System with Literacy and Mathematics Outcomes for Preschoolers” has shown that not only are smartboards suitable for preschoolers, but it shows drastic results in certain areas.
The study was conducted by a panel of experts in early childhood research, special education, child development and developmental psychology. The researchers found smartboards provide these children with core early literacy and math skills and determined the children gained a lot in relation to early literacy, print knowledge, phonological awareness, emergent writing and mathematics skills.
The study also showed a significant increase in children who were ready to read. At the beginning of the study, 46 percent were prepared to read when entering kindergarten; however, just six months later, that number nearly doubled, jumping to 82 percent.
This study simply reinforces the increasing adoption of smartboard technology within the classroom. Many school districts have been awarded education grants from federal officials in order to increase their methods of learning, which include greater adoption of school computers, interactive whiteboards and overhead projectors. Recently, the Ohio Department of Education was awarded $400 million to do just this, winners of the national “Race to the Top” competition.
