Six Rhode Island schools will receive grants, the majority of which will purchase new technology.Six public schools in Barrington, Rhode Island, will soon outfit their classrooms with new technology and other equipment thanks to grants from the Barrington Education Foundation, East Bay Rhode Island reports.

According to the news provider, the schools will receive 15 grants totaling $62,853 from the local nonprofit, supporting a wide range of programs and materials.

Technology purchases represent the largest portion of the grants, East Bay Rhode Island noted, followed by literacy projects. Barrington High School will also receive funding for its Life of the Athlete program, which encourages students to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

Educators have found they can use various types of technology to enrich the learning experience for students. For example, teachers can run a computer in conjunction with an HD-TV, LED monitor or DLP projector to create an environment encouraging student participation.

According to East Bay Rhode Island, funds were raised through the United Way, as well as donations from businesses, sponsors and individuals. Since 1992, the foundation has awarded more than $850,000.
